Young Buck’s V The Masters Match Report

Young Buck’s V The Masters Match Report

This family day saw the second annual Young Buck’s V The Masters Family Day football match played under very hot conditions.  The Young Bucks consisting of Casements Players under 25 , and the Masters anything above that  (nearly twice that in some cases).

The Young Bucks took to the field first , the Masters showing their experience in coming out a few minutes later (though an inside source later informed me it was due to ‘technical difficulties’ with getitng their jerseys and socks on).

This tactic proved itself in the first few minutes with the opening goal than by none other than Mr Liam ‘Lazarus’ Carey himself.  It was Game on !

The Young Bucks now started using their speed to good effect and shooting some very nice scores , opportunities created by some high-speed runs at the Masters defence.  Aggressive counter-attacking from the younger Masters kept their full forward line well supplied and these club stalwarts were shaking off the years and giving the cheering supporters an exhibition in shooting skills.

While many had expected this to be a non-event , it was turning into a titantic battle and neither side was going to give ground easily. It was a rare combination display of modern and classic football , with all–out attack and gut-busting high speed agility runs countered by long accurate passing and high ball fielding.

Leading at the break , the Young Bucks strong defence and a well led attack was inching them ahead.  The Masters were wobbling , quite literally in a few cases , when the 2nd water break arrived in the nick of time.  Play resumed and again the summer air was filled with the clash of battle , the earth shaking and sparks flying as players engaged in sporting combat. The supporters were cheering every heroic deed and even the sporting gods in Mount Olmpyus must have been watching enthalled.

After this last water break the Master’s steadied the ship , and the ebb anf flow of battle started to go in their favour. The Young Buck’s attack became increasingly isolated , and the Masters defence under General Micky ‘Two-Medals’ Bell held firm. All over the field , the Masters were soaking up the pressure – their rotund figures proof they were usally soaking up something quite different on a sunny Saturday afternoon!

The situation was becoming serious enough that on the Young Bucks sideline Lofty was seen to put down his Magners…just for a second though. A last minute penalty (for which the even the referee stepped outside the centre circle for ) failed to redress the balance and the Masters won out.

But there is no doubt that Casements Club were the real winners on a day that we all remembered past and absent friends. It’s a game that had quite a few talking points , and one that will be remissed about about for many a year , long past when the current Young Bucks have become old Masters themelves. There were even a few older war horses champing at the bit on the sideline , and the likes of Paddy Browne,Eamon Boyle had the glint of battle in their eyes, there was even  talk of setting up a ‘Legends’ team for next year..can’t wait!

Thanks to our roving reporter who shall remain anonymous…..
